If you take a moment to search any of the tech news sites or blogs today and you will see an overwhelming number of posts about Google’s latest project called “Project Glass”. In my browsing this morning, I saw posts from Larry Page, Sergey Brin, and a handful of other tech leaders regarding this new project that they are running. Basically, Glass is a set of Augmented reality glasses that navigate your world with you.
Before we dive too deep into this, lets take a moment to see their video showing you how Project Glass works.
Pretty cool huh? So what is Project Glass? Here is an explanation from their Google+ page:
We think technology should work for you—to be there when you need it and get out of your way when you don’t.
We started Project Glass to build this kind of technology, one that helps you explore and share your world, putting you back in the moment.
Follow along as we share some of our ideas and stories. We’d love to hear yours, too.
As someone who is a complete gadgethead and loves new technology, my first reaction was split. One the one side, I love the idea of how you use a piece of technology like this to navigate your world, but on the flip side is that it is another tether to keep you from truly unplugging. I would be one of the first, if I had the opportunity, to try this technology out, but it would take great discipline to make sure that I am able to pull away from it all to re-charge and find new inspiration.
Today, FastCompany had an article where it dove into this subject a bit. The core of the message is that you need to pull away from what keeps you busy to find new thoughts and inspiration. Have you ever realized that some of your best ideas come when you are not actually doing that type of task? I can’t tell you the number of times that I am in the shower, mowing my yard, or driving to Minnesota; that I have huge idea sessions. I am not forced to come up with ideas, yet out of my “pulling back from the situation” the ideas flow.
I am a GIANT fan of Google and what they bring to our world. The devices and tools that are infront of us can help us to strive ahead in productivity and innovation, yet it comes at a cost to be disciplined to not be ruled by such tools. Have fun. Enjoy. Innovate. Be you in every situation and don’t get so lost in what others are doing that you don’t create too. And yes, if you wear these, you will look like you are from Star Trek! hahaha
Side note: If this becomes a reality, I have a feeling my “oversharing” mentality will become a real problem for everyone else!
