What Is Your Purpose?

Have you ever been in a place where you give judgement on someone before you fully look into who they are, you simply look on the outside and judge? I am sure none of you have done that and I am in the minority (insert sarcasm)! Early on, I didn’t like Rick Warren. I can’t even tell you why I didn’t. I am not sure other than I was a dumb 20 something that knew nothing. But you know, that with age can tend to come with more maturity.

Well, most of the time it should.

Over the course of the last few years, I have grown to respect and look up to the wisdom that Rick Warren holds. I know he is far from perfect and quite frankly I don’t want to be around perfect people. Why? because they are not perfect and they think they are perfect. They are annoying.

I have yet to read Purpose Driven Life. Some day, I will need to read it to grasp the wisdom that Rick Warren has put into that book, but for now I glean from his twitter posts, on-line articles, and videos. Today’s TED Talk comes from Rick when he spoke at TED in 2006. This is an incredible message and I am pretty sure that he is the same way in this video as he is in his church, and you can see why Saddleback Church is doing some incredible things. As goes the leader, as goes the followers.

Random Thoughts…Poop Bag

The other day I was riding my bike on the Paint Creek Trail in Rochester Hills when something struck me. When I walk my dog down the trial, I need to carry a bag with me to pick up her… well lets say “waste”. If I were to just let her go where she pleased, then I would be operating in an uncivil way. Granted it would be just wrong as well. Hundred of people use that trail every day. Bikers, runners, and walkers use the Paint Creek Trail as the place to exercise and/or just be in nature.

So here is what struck me the other day. If i need to carry a bag to pick up after my dog, then why don’t horse riders need to clean up after their horses? It’s a simple question really? Have you ever been at a parade and seen the Poop Bag behind horses? A quick Google search will take you to the Bun Bag! The “waste” left behind from a horse is slightly larger than my dog, so it does tend to create a larger hazard for those using the trail.

This was just a random thought from my odd brain!

We are closing this week’s TED Talk of the Day by bringing one fresh from the TEDGlobal that is taking place right now. This is a great talk about the mediation of the internet all over the world and how it is used to impact democracy.

Rebecca MacKinnon had a great quote in the midst of this talk “the only legitimate purpose of government is to serve citizens, the only legitimate of technology is to improve our lives not to manipulate or enslave us”

Too Big To Change?

Tortured by a Toss

If you have been watching the news or ESPN in the last few days, you will have heard the story of Shannon Stone who went after a ball in the Texas Rangers game, who fell over a railing and died. This ball had been tossed in their direction from Josh Hamilton, after Mr. Stone had been yelling for him to throw a ball in their direction. This is a terrible situation for the Stone family, the Hamilton family, and the Rangers organization. Ever since I saw this story on WXYZ on Thursday night, my heart has been wrenched over this whole situation. Then when I found out it was from a ball thrown from Hamilton, I was blown away by the huge impact that this will have on him.

I write this today as a fan of Hamilton and asking that everyone be praying for him. This has huge potential to be a debilitating situation for any person. Hamilton has had rough times in life and has had successes. Check out his story here:

 

 

So.. I ask you to take a few minutes each day and pray for Hamilton. There are a lot of people who need prayer each day as well, which you should support them as well, but I ask for this because he has an incredible platform where kids are looking at him as a role model and to see how a man works through hard times. They see too many bad examples but I believe Hamilton can be a REAL man in the situation.
